Loire Valley Weather: Month by Month for Châteaux, Bikes and Balloons
The valley's weather is mild, but it still decides your day. It sets when balloons fly, whether a bike ride is fun and how long the châteaux stay open. Planning Loire Valley day tours? Match the month to what you want to do.
What the weather does to a Loire Valley visit
Much of what you book here happens outdoors. Vineyard walks, bike days and picnics depend on a dry day. Balloons fly only in calm air, at sunrise or sunset, and pilots decide on the day whether they can fly. Gardens at Villandry and Chaumont-sur-Loire are at their fullest from late spring to autumn.
The châteaux follow the season too. Chenonceau admits visitors until 19:00 in high summer and only until 16:30 in winter. Amboise closes at lunchtime from November. The averages below are Météo-France's 1991–2020 normals for Tours, in the middle of the valley.

Best time of day: balloons, gardens and crowds
Balloons take off in the first hours after sunrise or the last hours before sunset, when the air is calmest. Plan three to four hours from meeting to drop-off. A morning flight leaves the rest of your day free for a château.
On hot summer days, walk gardens in the morning and do the interiors in the afternoon. At Chenonceau, turn up at the time on your timed slot rather than earlier, as the château itself advises during heatwaves, to avoid waiting outside. Bike days are best started early for the same reason. Outdoor options are on Loire Valley outdoor activities.
