Loire Valley Châteaux Without a Tour

You can see the great châteaux of the Loire on your own, by train, shuttle bus and your feet. It costs less in cash and more in planning. This guide shows how to reach each château, which tickets to buy direct, what a day alone costs, and when one of the loire valley châteaux tours is the better buy.

Can you visit the Loire châteaux without a car?

Yes. The high-speed train from Paris Montparnasse reaches Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, on the edge of Tours, in about an hour. From there, regional trains serve Amboise, Chenonceaux and Blois, and a short connection takes you into Tours.

What you cannot easily do by train is link two châteaux in one day. Chenonceau to Chambord has no direct train. Plan one château a day, or two that share a town, such as the royal château and Clos Lucé in Amboise.

How do you get from Paris to the valley by train?

Four lines do most of the work. High-speed trains from Paris Montparnasse, and some from Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport, reach Saint-Pierre-des-Corps in about an hour. Intercity trains run direct from Paris Austerlitz to Amboise. Blois-Chambord is about 80 minutes from Paris, and Onzain, for Chaumont-sur-Loire, 1 hour 40 minutes from Paris Austerlitz.

Check times and fares on SNCF Connect, and book the TGV early for the best price. If you are staying a few days, sleep in Tours or Amboise rather than going back to Paris each night.

How do you get to Chenonceau by train?

Take a regional train to Chenonceaux station, which is 400 m from the château's ticket office. Chenonceau makes a timed slot compulsory, so buy your ticket online and choose your entry time before you board. In the heat of summer, arrive at your slot time rather than early.

The adult ticket is €19 with a brochure or €24 with an audioguide. Children aged 7 to 18 pay €15, and under-7s go free. Keep an hour for the gardens and the maze.

How do you reach Chambord without a car?

Take the train to Blois-Chambord, about 80 minutes from Paris. The Rémi line 2 shuttle bus runs from the station to the château for €3.30 a single journey, paid to the driver. Chambord is 25 minutes from Blois by road.

The 2026 adult price depends on where you live: €21 for nationals and residents of the European Economic Area, €31 for everyone else. Under-18s on an individual visit go free. Buy on the château's official ticket site and check the last bus before you set off.

How do you visit Amboise and Clos Lucé on foot?

Amboise is the easiest town to do without wheels. The station is a 10-minute walk from the Château Royal d'Amboise, with direct trains from Tours, Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, Orléans and Paris Austerlitz. Clos Lucé is a short walk from the château.

The château costs €17.30 with the Histopad, and Clos Lucé €20. Both open daily in summer, so you can do both in one day and still eat by the river. On a Friday or Sunday, start at the market.

What about Villandry, Azay-le-Rideau and Chaumont?

These take a little more. Villandry's own site sends you from Paris Montparnasse to Tours, then a 20-minute taxi, and its parking is free if you drive. Chaumont-sur-Loire's nearest station is Onzain, about 2 km from the estate and 20 minutes from Saint-Pierre-des-Corps; show a same-day train ticket and you pay less.

Azay-le-Rideau and Villandry together are the hardest pair without a car. That is where the Azay-le-Rideau and Villandry day earns its fare, with both entrance fees included.

Which tickets should you buy before you go?

Buy Chenonceau before you travel, because the timed slot is compulsory. Buy Chambord on its official ticket site so you arrive with your price band settled.

Buy from each château's own website rather than a reseller. At Chenonceau, a ticket bought elsewhere gets its slot assigned at the entrance gate, so you lose the choice of time.

What does a day on your own cost?

Take a two-château day, Chenonceau and Chambord, for one adult. Here is the independent version against a tour.

In cash, going alone is cheaper. In time, the tour wins: it puts two châteaux into one day that the railway would spread over two.

How do children's tickets change the sums?

Children make going alone cheaper still. Chambord lets under-18s in free on an individual visit. Chenonceau charges €15 for ages 7 to 18, Amboise €11, and Clos Lucé €15, with a family ticket for two adults and two children at €60. Villandry charges €5.50 for the gardens or €8 with the château for ages 8 to 17. Under-7s go free at Chenonceau, Amboise, Clos Lucé and Chinon.

Tour fares are quoted per person, so add up your family's admissions and trains before you compare. For a family of four, that sum often decides it.

What does a two-day plan on your own look like?

• Day 1, Amboise. Train to Amboise, the royal château and Leonardo's tomb in the morning, lunch by the river, Clos Lucé in the afternoon. On a Friday or Sunday, the market first.
• Day 2, Chenonceau. A regional train to Chenonceaux, your timed slot, the gallery, the gardens and a rowing boat on the Cher.

The Rémi Découverte pass, €45 for two days for up to five people, covers the regional trains and buses on both days. Add a third day by train and shuttle bus for Chambord from Blois-Chambord.

Should you hire a car instead?

A car links what the railway does not. Château de Chenonceau and Château de Chambord both sit about two hours from Paris on the A10, and a car lets you pair them, or Azay-le-Rideau and Villandry, in one day. Chambord charges €8 a day to park, and Villandry's parking is free.

The catch is the wine. If you plan to taste in Vouvray or Chinon, leave the driving to a tour. Getting to the Loire Valley has the road times each château prints.

Can you cycle between the châteaux?

Yes, on the Loire à Vélo, a cycle route of about 900 km along the river. Chinon's fortress takes a euro off your ticket if you show a photo of yourself with your bike. The outdoor activities page covers the route.

What does a guided tour add?

Three things. It links châteaux that no train links. It puts somebody beside you who tells you whose rooms you are standing in. And on the days that include admission, it books your Chenonceau slot and your tickets for you.

What it takes away is time: an hour or two at each château, on the group's schedule. If you want a whole morning in one château, go alone.

There is a middle way. Visit Amboise and Chenonceau on your own by train, where the stations are a walk from the gates, and book a tour only for the pair the railway cannot link: Chambord with Chenonceau, or Azay-le-Rideau with Villandry. You keep the slow mornings and lose the hardest connections.

When is a tour the better buy?

• When you want two châteaux in a day without a car. The railway rarely allows it.
• When you want Azay-le-Rideau and Villandry together. Neither is a walk from a station.
• When you want wine. Somebody else drives between the estates.
• When your party is large. A private day with pickup in Tours, Amboise or Blois puts everyone in one vehicle, tickets included.

Is there a short tour you can add to a day alone?

Yes. In Amboise, the one-hour Segway tour leaves from opposite the tourist office and passes the château walls, for $33. It fits between the château and Clos Lucé. A balloon flight at sunrise or in the evening also leaves your day free for the châteaux.
